Sunday Joint: The Goddess Collective & Muertito

Sunday 1 May 2022

The Goddess Collective burst onto the buzzing Leeds DIY jazz/global beats scene last autumn and quickly made a big impact. An 8 piece all-female Afro/Latin fusion jazz band taking inspiration from the likes of Nubiyan Twist, Sons of Kemet and Nérija, they were totally unique. With their heavy rhythm section (including two drummers), firing brass and electric violin plus the all-women line-up, they brought an exciting fresh feminist tinted vision to the Leeds jazz scene.

They became part of the Moma Cast Discos collective, released a debut single and began playing across the city. They played their debut show at Hifi Club for Sunday Joint last October as a support to Kontiki. In 2022 so far, they have played at The Wardrobe, Belgrave Music Hall, Hyde Park Book Club and in March, they made their debut at the Brudenell Social Club. It was a DJ Lubi double bill of women jazz bands where they supported London Latin jazz ensemble Colectiva to a packed crowd. It’s great to have them return to Sunday Joint for their first headline show at Hifi Club.

The band are : Sam Brown – violin, Fee Buckton- trumpet, Flora Taylor- tenor sax, Hyo Jung – guitar, Lilla Hall- piano, Louis George – electric bass, Katie Proctor – drums, Maeve Thorpe – drums.

Support comes from a new Leeds band of familiar faces from the jazz/global beats scene. With a line-up consisting of Spanish guitar, West African calabash and fretless bass, afro-flamenco outfit Muertito draws on the rich influence of MPB greats such as Jorge Ben and Baden Powell alongside the flamenco offerings of Paco de Lucia. Formed after a series of studio sessions and jams around the parks of Leeds, Matías Reed (guitar – Mansion Of Snakes/Vipertime) and Luke Reddin-Williams (calabash – Roller Trio/Vipertime)) soon invited Sam Dutton-Taylor (bass – Mansion Of Snakes) to complete the line-up. The trio have recorded a video session featuring vocalist Georgie Buchanan and are preparing to head into the studio this year to record new music for release later in the year. They make their Sunday Joint/Hifi Club debut tonight.

Warming up early doors is resident Sunday Joint DJ and host and all round Leeds jazz/soul/global beats legend Lubi Jovanovic aka DJ Lubi. He’ll be delivering the jazzy and soulful beats. After the bands, it’s time for Moma Cat Disco with resident DJ Mxtias (Matias Gorlero Barnes) from Moma Cat Discos/Bazuka. He’ll be dropping his usual mix of tropical bass, global beats and other heavy rhythmic vibes (dancehall, hip-hop, UKG, broken beats). Doors are 8pm, first band onstage 8.45pm, headline band 10pm, late night club session from 11pm.
