PLANTFOOD are one of the hottest young bands to emerge in the post covid era in the buzzing Leeds DIY jazz/global beats scene. They first came together in 2019 as students at Leeds Conservatoire but their development was temporarily halted due to the pandemic.

They play contemporary afro-fusion/jazz, equally heavy on the beats and instrumental improvisation, and acknowledge their main musical influences are two current UK jazz explosion bands, Ezra Collective and Nubiyan Twist.

After gigs returned in May 2021, they began playing regularly across Leeds (Brudenell Social Club, Hifi Club, The Wardrobe, Belgrave Music Hall, Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds University) building up a strong following and releasing their debut single “Monstera” for Moma Cat Discos. In 2022, they released their second single “Favourite Things”, again via Moma Cat Discos, and have started getting regular shows outside Leeds with appearances in Sheffield, Harrogate, Cumbria, Huddersfield and now regularly making trips to London.

The rep grows bigger and their diary is filling up. Their last Sunday Joint headline show was back in October 2021, a memorable night of mosh-pit jazz raving, so it’s great to finally have them back again before they head off into the summer festival season. Expect some new music alongside old favourites.

PLANTFOOD are : Ruben Maric – keyboards, Woody Hayden – electric bass, Finn Hamilton – drum kit, JJ Petrie – percussion, George Woolley – baritone sax/bass clarinet/flute, Joe van de Meulen – tenor/soprano sax

Our resident house band leader, drummer OSCAR HORNER, is supporting Plantfood but this time he brings in his full-time regular quartet to Sunday Joint. Expect some gnarly left-field hip-hop beats and drum & bass vibes married to mad jazz improvisation. All original material. Get down early for some
