Sunday 22 May 2022

Tonight’s Sunday Joint is a showcase for two fantastic young nusoul/neo-soul singers breaking out in the UK scene right now – Jess Edie and Nyah Grace. Both have Manchester connections – Jess Edie is originally from there but lives in Leeds, Nyah Grace lives there though is originally from the USA. Both make great original music with their fellow musicians and have fantastic soulful voices. A real double treat for lovers of contemporary soul music.

Jess Edie is a soul singer from Manchester but for the last 3 years, she’s lived in Leeds studying at Leeds Conservatoire. Now in her final year, her first 18 months in Leeds were disrupted by the pandemic and the shutdown of music/entertainment/venues and wider society in general. Finally in January this year, she got back to live performing with her 6 piece band and made her Hifi Club/Sunday Joint debut supporting Mica Sefia at the first session of 2022. A seasoned performer, she’ll be showcasing her original material, including new songs, alongside a few reimagined covers done Jess Edie style. She is definitely in the neo-soul/r’n’b musical camp with some added pop music flavour and cites her favourite singers as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, H.E.R and Leeds’ very own soul queen Corinne Bailey Rae. With a band of Leeds Conservatoire A-list jazz/soul musicians, this will be a quality set of contemporary soul music from a singer with a bright future ahead of her.

Support comes from U.S. singer Nyah Grace, originally from Oregon but now based in Manchester. A natural singer, she was talent spotted at 16 back home when she was already performing and writing original material. Her management linked her up with award winning songwriter/producer Steve Chrisanthou (co-writer of “Put Your Records On” by Corinne Bailey Rae) and in 2019, she moved to the UK to work on an album with him. In 2020, that album “Honey-Coloured” was released to great acclaim and got support on Radio 1, Jazz FM and 1Xtra. It featured Nyah’s original material with co-writers and one track featuring guest vocals from Corinne Bailey Rae (“My Sistah Told Me”). Just as it took off, the pandemic hit and Nyah had to move back to Oregon. She finally returned in summer 2021 and settled in Manchester and re-started her music career over here. She makes her Hifi Club/Sunday Joint debut tonight with her stripped down trio – herself on vocals and playing guitar plus bass and drums. Expect some sweet organic soul from another future star.

Doors are 8.00pm. DJ Lubi hosting and warming up with some sweet soul sounds and jazzy beats. First set 8.45pm, headliners 10pm. After the bands, DJ Mxtias and his crew will be hosting the Moma Cat Disco playing tropical beats, global soul, reggae, UKG and hip-hop. Entry is, as always, free.
