Sunday 17 April 2022

After two weeks off due to the Easter holidays, Sunday Joint returns for a big Easter Sunday special with the 12 piece cosmic ska/brass band phenomena known as the Intergalactic Brasstronauts. They drop into Hifi Club as part of their 2022 Spring UK tour.

With their transglobal rhythms, heavy bass section (comprising sousaphone and contrabass clarinet), blistering solos and sci-fi theme, Intergalactic Brasstronauts are far from your typical brass band. This 12-piece outfit from Yorkshire draw on a wide range of influences including dub, reggae, jazz and electronica. The band is the brainchild of producer and composer Sam Thornton, a.k.a. King Zepha, and he called on the mighty New York Brass Band (regulars at Glastonbury, Cork Jazz Festival & Rio Carnival) to provide the horsepower.

Their debut album “Music For The People”, released back in July 2021, was supported by the Arts Council of England and has been described as “infectious and seriously funky” by James Morrison (BBC Radio 2), “crazy and immense” by Riddim Magazine and “perfect” by Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music). Imagine if a jam session were cosmic jazz legend Sun Ra is onstage with members of The Specials/Madness/Bad Manners and you start to get the picture. With no work on Monday due to the bank holiday, Intergalactic Brasstronauts are the perfect band to rock this Easter Sunday Joint party.

Warming up before the band is resident Sunday Joint DJ Mxtias (Matias Gorlero Barnes) from Moma Cat Discos/Bazuka. He’ll be dropping some classic and new ska music before the band and then afterwards, his usual mix of tropical bass, global beats and other heavy rhythmic vibes (dancehall, hip-hop, UKG, broken beats).

Note that doors open later than usual at 10pm.
Entry is, as always, free.

Normal opening time of 8pm will return on Sunday 24th April.
