Sunday 15 May 2022

Tonight, we celebrate the birthday of our resident DJ/host/band booker DJ Lubi with a night that brings together two of his main musical loves – Brazilian beats and African music – so welcome to his Sunday Joint “Africa-Brazil” birthday session.

Tempo Feliz are the Leeds/UK based Brazil-inspired ensemble who played our second Sunday Joint session after 18 months off back in September 2021. They perform exciting original compositions and electrifying arrangements of Brazilian classics. Having collectively been captivated by the rich and multi-faceted landscape of Brazil, Tempo Feliz fuse funk, soul and disco with Brazilian percussion styles, creating their own original grooves with flavours of samba, batucada and MPB. The 9-piece ensemble is a Music:Leeds/Launchpad-supported group and have been writing and performing on stages throughout the UK for over 5 years.

In summer 2021, they released their debut album “Respirar” which was written during the band’s 5 years gigging across the country and experiencing the ebb and flow of audiences on the dancefloor. Translated as “to breathe”, “Respirar” encompasses high energy dance grooves as well as moments of calm, centred around the collective breath of the audience. The album includes sections that highlight the fierce horn section, backed up with driving funk-orientated guitar and bateria percussion as well as melancholic and spacious numbers showcasing the band’s depth of playing and compositional arrangement. After a great response to the debut single, also called “Respirar”, from DJs on Worldwide FM, Soho Radio, Jazz FM, Totally Wired Radio etc, Tempo Feliz dropped the full debut album on HBPC Records. The album also included remixes from Sibson (Elevator East), Charles Vaughan (Worldwide FM) and renowned global groove taste-maker Aroop Roy. If you were at their last packed Sunday Joint show in September 2021, you’ll remember a night of great Brazilian music, from samba funk to Brazilian bossa, made for dancing. Standing still is not an option.

For the African music part of the night, we welcome back 9 piece afrofusion band Afrodesia. Led by Leeds Conservatoire saxophonist Reece Fogg, they include musicians from the conservatoire as well as others from the University Of Leeds music degree course. They made their Sunday Joint debut in January 2022 as part of the Leeds Conservatoire Afro-Caribbean Society takeover and they knocked the crowd out with a passionate set of afro-jazz fusion bringing together classic afrobeat, highlife and afro-jazz. This young band (average ages 19-20) are the next generation of Leeds jazz musicians coming through and as always, Sunday Joint is proud to be giving them the platform to step up to the next level

DJ Lubi playing early doors with a set of classic afrobeat/highlife funk and samba/Brazilian beats. Then after the bands, DJ Mxtias (Bazuka) brings you his “Moma Cat Disco” with banging tropical bass and global beats until late. Doors 8pm. Support band 8.45pm. Headline band 10pm.
