Sunday Joint: Tempo Feliz & Guests
Sunday 26 September 2021
“A Trip To Brasil” // Tempo Feliz // Quinteto Gustavo Andrade // DJ Lubi
For our second Sunday Joint of the new autumn season, we take you on “A Trip To Brasil” with one of Leeds’ best Brazilian music bands and support from the new samba/bossa jazz quintet led by a saxophonist from Sao Paulo, Brasil.
Tempo Feliz are the Leeds-based Brazil-inspired ensemble performing an exciting fusion of original grooves and compositions and electrifying arrangements of Brazilian classics. Taking their lead from the multifaceted musical landscape of Brazil, they fuse funk, soul, jazz and disco vibes with Brazilian percussion and styles, creating their own original music with flavours of samba, bossa-nova and MPB. The 8-piece ensemble are a Music:Leeds launchpad-supported artist group and feature some heavyweight players from our rich and diverse Leeds DIY jazz/global beats scene.
They had been, until 2020, performing live on stages throughout the UK for over 5 years. Also in that time, they wrote original compositions and arranged some Brazilian music classics in their own style and honed them to perfection, ready for the recording studio. In 2019/2020, they hit Eiger Studios and put down their debut album which should have been released by summer 2020. Like so many things in the music scene, it had to be postponed to summer 2021 due to the COVID pandemic. However, this meant they could add some killer remixes done this year to the release, which include reworks by Charles Vaughn (Worldwide FM), Sibson (Elevator East) and the Brazilian music remix/edits king Aroop Roy!
They finally launched their debut album “Respirar” in June at the Brudenell Social Club for a Brazilian jazz special at DJ Lubi’s Jazzland Sessions. It was a socially distanced and limited capacity show (80 people) but it literally sold out in 6 days! If you missed out on getting tickets for that one, make sure you get down to this Sunday Joint show for some Brazilian jazz-funk x samba power from Tempo Feliz.
Support comes from a quintet of great emerging young players from Leeds Conservatoire who love Brazilian music. We don’t have a girl from Ipanema but we do have a boy from Sao Paulo, Brasil. We’re talking about tenor saxophonist Gustavo Andrade and his firing samba/bossa jazz band. Gustavo has been at the music college for 2 years now and is well established as a contemporary jazz player in the scene. This year was the first time he got the opportunity to play the music of his homeland while in Leeds. He put together a fantastic quintet of some of the music college’s best players and alumni and they performed classics and rarities from the Brazilian music songbook – bossa, MPB, samba jazz. To give you an idea of the flavour, Gustavo’s favourite Brazilian musicians are bossa/MPB legends like Jorge Ben, Tom Jobim, Tim Maia and Djavan. And from the jazz side, he loves Vinicius Chagas, Hermeto Pascoal and Amaro Freitas. They blew away another sold out Jazzland Sessions Brasil show at Brudenell Social Club Leeds in August supporting Carioca Soul. Watch out for this band. They are one of the most exciting Brazilian jazz bands to come on the scene up north in the last few years.
Before and between sets, Leeds jazz/soul/Latin/Brazilian music legend and our Sunday Joint host and DJ Lubi Jovanovic will be playing some vinyl Brazilian music classics to keep everything nice and Rio vibed. At 11pm, the Sunday Joint DJs take over spinning funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and world grooves until the early hours.
As always, Leeds jazz/soul/global beats promoter/DJ legend Lubi Jovanovic (aka DJ Lubi) will be hosting the night, introducing the acts and playing warm-up sets around the live music between 8pm and 11pm. After 11pm, the Sunday Joint resident DJs will jump on the decks and continue playing into the early hours.
The legendary Sunday Joint has hosted some of the greatest Soul, Latin, Hip Hop, Funk and Salsa acts since 1994. We’ve had Gentlemans Dub Club, Haggis Horns, Submotion Orchestra, Corinne Bailey Rae, Ugly Duckling, Auntie Flo, Andrew Ashong, Mayer Hawthrone, Fatima & The Eglo Band and many more acts in our basement in recent years, with fresh bands coming through all the time.
Following on from the band, HiFi’s amazing crew of resident DJs – all of them fierce record collectors – will be playing a mix of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and Reggae into the early hours of Monday morning.
Please note that doors are at 8pm with the band onstage soon after. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.
