Sunday Joint: Project Hilts & Guests
Sunday 19 September 2021
Project Hilts (EP launch) // Lodder Nossen Creighton & Guests // DJ Lubi
After 18 months off due to the pandemic, WE ARE BACK! The legendary Sunday Joint (27 years of weekly live music and still standing) returns on September 19th with a huge re-launch party. We have one of London’s most adventurous young bands fusing jazz/grime/hip-hop/soul alongside our new resident trio with special guests.
Project Hilts formed at Leeds College Of Music in 2018. Brainchild of London grime MC Hilts (formerly part of The Square grime crew from Lewsisham), he put the band together when he moved up north from the capital to Leeds to study production at the music college. Swapping laptop beats for a full 8 piece live band, he assembled some of the finest musicians at the college to join him and Project Hilts was born. Bringing together their combined love of jazz, hip-hop, neo-soul, Latin music and of course grime, they soon rose through the ranks of college band to support band (including slots with Submotion Orchestra, Emma Jean Thackray, Too Many Zooz, Jungle Brown) to selling out small venue to headlining the 400 capacity Wardrobe. With gigs in 2019 in Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and London plus a debut single “Lonely Days” and a big headline show at The Wardrobe in December that year, their rep was growing bigger month by month and 2020 was going to be their breakout year. A spring 2020 Sunday Joint show at Hifi Club on 15th March would be their last live show and also our last Sunday Joint show for 18 months as the pandemic shut down music UK wide.
In summer 2021, Project Hilts regrouped in London (all musicians are from there originally and moved back after graduating from music college) and released a new single “Dark Side” to great reviews. On September 15th, they will drop their debut EP “Still Here” and play a UK promo tour including the relaunch of Sunday Joint on September 19th. It’s only fitting that the last band to play at Sunday Joint before the shutdown are the first to relaunch the night as we return.
We also have a great new concept for support slots for the new season – a resident house band trio featuring some of the best young musicians on the Leeds DIY jazz/soul/beats scene backing guest singers/MCs/musicians from Leeds Conservatoire and non-student musicians too. Welcome to Lodder/Nossen/Creighton featuring Jonny Lodder (drums), Amanda Nossen (bass guitar) and Eve Creighton (electric guitar). Two graduates from the conservatoire (Jonny and Eve) and one current final year student (Amanda), they’re well known and well established in the Leeds music scene. The trio will feature guest artists each session they play and for this one, Sheffield MC Yusuf Yellow will jump on a couple of tunes from his debut EP backed by the house band. More guests are being confirmed right now.
As always, Leeds jazz/soul/global beats promoter/DJ legend Lubi Jovanovic (aka DJ Lubi) will be hosting the night, introducing the acts and playing warm-up sets around the live music between 8pm and 11pm. After 11pm, the Sunday Joint resident DJs will jump on the decks and continue playing into the early hours.
The legendary Sunday Joint has hosted some of the greatest Soul, Latin, Hip Hop, Funk and Salsa acts since 1994. We’ve had Gentlemans Dub Club, Haggis Horns, Submotion Orchestra, Corinne Bailey Rae, Ugly Duckling, Auntie Flo, Andrew Ashong, Mayer Hawthrone, Fatima & The Eglo Band and many more acts in our basement in recent years, with fresh bands coming through all the time.
Following on from the band, HiFi’s amazing crew of resident DJs – all of them fierce record collectors – will be playing a mix of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and Reggae into the early hours of Monday morning.
Please note that doors are at 8pm with the band onstage soon after. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.
