Sunday Joint: Moma Cat Discos Takeover

Sunday 17 October 2021

We hand over the Sunday Joint to Leeds independent global beats/leftfield jazz/electronica label Moma Cat Discos, founded and run by DJ/producer Matias Gorlero Barnes. He’s picked 3 bands to play who are releasing music or have links to the label and he’ll also be DJing between sets. Moma Cat Discos is one of the most exciting new labels to hit Leeds post lockdown and their first few showcase nights have been great events shining a spotlight on the super talented next generation of Leeds jazz/soul/global beats/electronica artists coming through right now from Leeds Conservatoire.

PLANTFOOD are one of the hottest new young bands on an already overheating Leeds jazz/global beats scene. They first came together in 2019 as students at Leeds Conservatoire but their development was temporarily halted due to the pandemic. They play contemporary afro-fusion jazz, equally heavy on the beats and instrumental improvisation and acknowledge their main musical influences are two current UK jazz explosion bands, Ezra Collective and Nubiyan Twist. After gigs returned in May 2021, they played a sold out Jazzland Sessions socially distanced show at the end of that month at Brudenell Social Club supporting Awen Ensemble (where they launched their debut single “Monstera” for Moma Cat Discos). They finally returned to the stage as headliners in September 2021 selling out Hyde Park Book Club for the first Moma Cat Discos label showcase as well as a packed Wardrobe for a Leeds Conservatoire freshers event. Now comes their first headline show for Sunday Joint. Expect some rowdy moshpit jazz meets global sounds.
