Cancelled & Rescheduling – Sunday Joint & DJ Lubi Present Etuk Ubong & The Etuk Philosophy (Direct From Nigeria) & Space Dolphin
Sunday 12 April 2020
We’ve got a great Easter Bank Holiday Sunday Joint Special for you where afrobeat meets jazz. funk and hip-hop!
Nigerian trumpeter Etuk Ubong is one of the most exciting young musicians to come out of the African music scene in recent years. London Jazz News described him as “a fresh new voice in the international jazz scene”. Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1992, Etuk has performed professionally for close to a decade and it was on the bandstands of renowned musicians like Femi Kuti, Victor Olaiya and Buchi where he earned his stripes and developed a passion for music. Drawing inspiration from the jazz greats and of course afrobeat legends, his music is a fusion of jazz, afrobeat, highlife, afro-soul and ekombi. He adds the sounds of the elements – water, wind and fire – into this fusion to inspire him. This is why he calls his music ‘Earth Music’. His compositions reflect his heritage and life philosophy of goodwill, peace and love to humanity. Etuk Ubong is also the owner of the fast growing heart of Lagos night club known as THE TRUTH, currently the most vibrant venue in the city since the demise of the original Fela Kuti venue The Shrine.
Etuk Ubong released his debut EP “Miracle” in 2016 with another quartet of Nigerian artists. Following the success of “Miracle”, he released his debut album “Tales of Life” in 2017. He releases his second full album on Night Dreamer Records, recorded straight to vinyl, in 2020. Though fresh on the scene, he has already collaborated with some of the leading lights of the London jazz fraternity making appearances at the firing Steam Down and Jazz Re:Freshed sessions, playing with Dele Sosimi and attracting strong support from Gilles Peterson, including playing at his inaugural We Out Here Festival in 2019. Also in 2019 he was featured at the London Jazz Festival as well as playing top London venues Jazz Cafe, Total Refreshment Centre and Pizza Express. Expect an exciting blend of afrobeat, afrofunk and jazz fusion from Etuk and his 9 piece band The Etuk Philosphy.
Support comes from highly rated Leeds jazz/hip-hop quartet Space Dolphin, led by keyboard wizard/multi-instrumentalist Jake Mehew. Formed in 2017, they’ve already released a debut EP “Hikikomori”, played shows across the country, collaborated with hip-hop MCs Motormouf and Phenician Gold, played Gilles Peterson’s inaugural We Out Here Festival in 2019 and supported one of their musical heroes, jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers. Whether dropping live Dilla/Madlib style beats and grooves for MCs to spit bars over or playing straight up 70s influenced Herbie Hancock/Ramsey Lewis style fusion funk, they always deliver the goods.
Doors 8.00pm. Live music 8.45pm (Space Dolphin) and 9.45pm (Etuk Ubong & The Etuk Philosophy). DJ Lubi before and between live sets and Sunday Joint DJs after the live music until late. Entry is free.Time8pm
