Cancelled & Rescheduling – Sunday Joint & DJ Lubi Present Kontiki & Awen Ensemble

Kontiki are the Bradford/Leeds based afro-fusion crew who love the guitar infused dance music of Central and West Africa – soukous, rhumba, highlife. No nonsense hypnotic dance grooves with horn and guitar solos guaranteed to rock any dancefloor. Add in some Fela inspired Nigerian afrobeat, a dose of Manu Dibango soul makossa/afro jazz and you have a perfect blend of dancefloor magic. With a strong local following built up over a string of live shows the last few years, their debut EP sold out it’s first run in 2 weeks last autumn. They’re venturing out of Leeds now for gigs and have their debut LP ready for release later this year. Ones to watch for 2020, come and check their Yorkshire x Afrosounds vibes.

This week’s Leeds College Of Music support band are Awen Ensemble, a Leeds based contemporary jazz collective led by trumpeter Emyr Penry Dance and guitarist Ruari Graham. Taking inspiration from world music and its traditions, the band play melodically driven music with a modal and groove based focus. The band are :
Emyr Penry Dance – trumpet, Saul Duff – tenor saxophone (recently at Sunday Joint with Narcle), Ruari Graham – electric guitar, Samantha Binotti – vibraphone (recently at Sunday Joint for the RE:SOUL session), Joe Wilkes – bass guitar, and Jona Tromp – drums.

Doors 8.00pm. Live music 8.45pm (Awen Ensemble) and 9.45pm (Kontiki). DJ Lubi before and between live sets and Sunday Joint DJs after the live music until late. Entry is free.
