Sunday Joint & DJ Lubi Present Fergus Quill’s Imaginary Big Band & Hev
Sunday 22 March 2020
Fergus Quill’s Imaginary Big Band are a semi-fictional large ensemble noise machine who’s primary aim is to make Britain weird again through cosmic and intergalactic energy inspired by the great cosmic jazz legend Sun Ra and his intrepid musicians the Arkestra. This is no covers band. Instead, they take their musical and organisational inspiration from the great one and adapt it to their own environment. Led by maverick Leeds bass player and band leader Fergus Quill the IBB is an assembly of musicians from our very fine Leeds DIY young jazz scene featuring members of the following local heroes : Têtes de Pois, DULAHLI, Skwid Ink, Garde Dog, Necktr, The Mabgate Swingers Party, J Frisco, Jasmine, TC and The Groove Family, B-ahwe, Slow Loris, Mamilah, Eastgate Big Band, Sonic Blue, GROWtrio, Dixon, HEV and Hey Fish/Yo Swine amongst many others. The sheer size of the ensemble (24 piece) means they can only play live maybe every 3-4 months and to date in the last 18 months, this colossus of a band have squeezed musicians and instruments onto stages way to small for them at only The Wardrobe, Hyde Park Book Club, Domino Club and Brudenell Social Club. Tonight, they bring their musical ruckus to Hifi Club for a Sunday Joint special playing rowdy and always huge sounding arrangements of tunes from composers including Duke Ellington, Sun Ra, The Rajasthan Express, Art Ensemble Of Chicago and of course, their ever expanding pad of original material. Come and witness something really special that only ever happens a few times a year. And very rarely happens with free entry!
With a 24 piece headline band, we had to put in a trio as support. Another band from the ever expanding Tight Lines stable, HEV are described as sounding like “The Meters on crack”. With a stellar line up of Will Lakin guitar (Skwid Ink), Josh Ketch drums (Golden Age Of TV/Têtes de Pois) and George MacDonald keys (Skwid Ink/Têtes de Pois), their instrumental punky funky jazz is the perfect warm-up for the Imaginary Big Band.
Doors 8.00pm. Live music 8.45pm and 09.45pm. DJ Lubi before and between sets and Sunday Joint DJs after the live music until late. Entry is as always FREE.Time8pm
