Sunday Joint // 2/22 + Oscar Horner Trio & Guests
Sunday 6 February 2022
2/22 (two-twenty-two) are one of the hottest jazz ensembles to emerge from the rehearsal rooms of Leeds Conservatoire in the last 18 months. Like minded souls coming together from a love of UK/US contemporary jazz fusion and influenced by the likes of Yussef Kamaal/Butcher Brown/Ezra Collective/Alfa Mist, 2/22 blend jazz with a multitude of genres, consistently keeping energy, emotion and infectious rhythm at the forefront.
This is definitely “jazz in the present tense”. They began in their second year at the music conservatoire but their progress was temporarily stalled as the pandemic shut down the music scene and gigs disappeared. Since live music came back last summer, they’ve played sold out/packed events at Hyde Park Book Club, Smokestack, The Wardrobe as well as supporting London’s explosive jazz/afro/bass giants Steamdown at Headrow House. In November, they headlined Brudenell Social Club for the first time at DJ Lubi’s Jazzland Session “Young Jazz Rebels” showcase. On a Monday night in November, they put 200 people into the main room. A phenomenal achievement for a band of final year music college students.
That same month, they also released their debut single “Opal” produced by Leeds jazz/soul genius producer Troy Kay, a killer slice of jazz improvisation and broken beat madness. It made it onto the BBC Introducing (West Yorkshire) “Best Of 2021” list. With a new single “Dawn” dropping in March and their debut EP later in the spring, plus more heavy shows in Leeds and beyond in the next 6 months, 2022 will definitely be the breakout year for 2/22. Come and check what all the fuss is about.
2/22 are : Taye George – drums, Ruben Maric – keys, Theo Wells-George – electric bass guitar, Conor Thomas – electric guitar, Gustavo Andrade – tenor sax, Emyr Penry Dance – trumpet.
After a great autumn season of shows from our Sunday Joint houseband LNC3 (Jonny Lodder – drums, Mandy Nossen – electric bass, Eve Creighton – guitar), sadly they had to step down this year due to mad work commitments with other bands and projects. We thank them for some killer shows and we look forward to seeing them back this season at Sunday Joint with some of their other bands. So, let us introduce you to our new house band. They are another trio and again, led by a drummer. Oscar Horner graduated from Leeds Conservatoire in summer 2021 and is now working professionally in the Leeds music scene. He leads his own contemporary jazz group, the Oscar Horner Quartet, and also plays drums for Lebanese singer Yasmina Nahas and her global soul Sunkissed Child project. They smashed the final Sunday Joint of 2021 and Oscar’s powerhouse drumming was a driving force of the band. Now he’ll be our resident band musical director and drummer, inviting special guest instrumentalists, singers and MCs to perform with the houseband trio. For this show, he’s in incredible musical company in the trio with Woody Hayden (Plantfood) on bass and Myron Evans aka “That Dapper Musician”, on keys. Get down early and see what they’ve cooked up and who’s jumping up on stage with them as special guests.
