Sam’s Soul Shack: The World Tour – Northern Soul
Saturday 11 August 2018
Everyone has been gripped by World Cup fever, and Sam is no exception. But he has global interests of another kind too: he is on a quest to find the sauciest soul sounds from overseas – and we are going to showcase them in the HiFi basement this summer.
He has enlisted some of Leeds’ finest selectors to join him on a journey which will take you from our gritty northern streets to strange towns in Eastern Europe to Caribbean dancehalls and even the White Isle in the 80s.
The next stop on Sam’s World Tour takes us back home for a little break from the heat with the familiar taste of northern grit. The popularity of soul music in the UK was arguably born in the clubs of northern England: Blackpool, Wigan, Stoke, Manchester and even at our very own HiFi Club in Leeds when it was known as Leeds Central Soul Club. The records played in these venues are some of the most recognisable of the genre: classic, high energy soul tracks shipped made in America and lovingly shipped across the Atlantic to the benefit of UK dancefloors.
The tradition continues today through the original collectors and fresh additions to the scene, including Reeshy who, as well as DJing disco, house and techno, has a passion for vintage Northern Soul. She will be your host for the evening.
