Sam’s Soul Shack: The World Tour – The Caribbean
Saturday 28 July 2018
Everyone is gripped by World Cup fever, and Sam is no exception. But he has global interests of another kind too: he is on a quest to find the sauciest soul sounds from overseas – and we are going to showcase them in the HiFi basement this summer.
He has enlisted some of Leeds’ finest selectors to join him on a journey which will take you from our gritty northern streets to strange towns in Eastern Europe to Caribbean dancehalls and even the White Isle in the 80s.
The Caribbean’s most lasting influence on music history originates in Jamaica, from where ska, rocksteady, reggae and dub all sprouted. And, while this is certainly something we will explore at the next stop on Sam’s world tour, there are at least 28 more caribbean islands and many more musical genres to discover: mento, calypso, cumbia, salsa, ragga, soca…
Sam’s whistle stop tour of the islands is led by World Treasure’s Mike Greenwell. The Cosmic Slop resident has just returned from a record digging holiday in Trinidad, so should have plenty of rare wax to dust off and showcase in the HiFi basement.
