Sam’s Soul Shack: The World Tour – West Africa
Saturday 21 July 2018
Everyone is gripped by World Cup fever, and Sam is no exception. But he has global interests of another kind too: he is on a quest to find the sauciest soul sounds from overseas – and we are going to showcase them in the HiFi basement this summer.
He has enlisted some of Leeds’ finest selectors to join him on a journey which will take you from our gritty northern streets to strange towns in Eastern Europe to Caribbean dancehalls and even the White Isle in the 80s.
We are all to often guilty of viewing the African continent as a whole, when in fact each region has rich and varied cultures of their own. Particularly with music, we have a knee-jerk reaction to broadly “African” sounds, without looking any deeper. But, this week, Sam is paying a visit to one of the regions that has produced some of the most thrilling and inimitable soul music of all time. It is thanks to Ghanan, Nigerian, Beninese, Malian, Sierra Leonese and Senegalese musicians that we can enjoy to the popular genres of Highlife, Afrobeat and other varieties of West African funk.
HiFi resident and vinyl record junkie Scott Dulson is your selector for this event.
